Info. About Kids

We love kids at our family dental clinics!

At what age should my child's first dental visit be?

The BC Dental Assn. recommends that your child's first dental visit should occur by age one or within six months of when you see the first tooth.

If cavities found in very young children (0-4 years of age) are not treated, decay can spread deeper into the tooth, causing pain and infection and even damage to the underlying adult tooth.

How often should my child visit the dentist?

Normally children should visit the dentist twice a year. This allows us to catch any potential problems early to prevent the problems from getting much worse. Children who are at increased risk of tooth decay, have unusual growth patterns, or who have poor oral hygiene may need more frequent visits.

Brushing your Child's Teeth

It can be challenging to brush your baby's or toddler's teeth but it is a very important step to keep your child's teeth and gums healthy. Brush twice a day (after breakfast and before bedtime) for at least two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste. Use a pea-sized portion for children over three years of age and a smear (size of a grain of rice) for those under three. Teach your child to spit the toothpaste out. Brush your child's teeth until they are 7 or 8 then brush with them until you are sure they can brush properly on their own.

Flossing

Flossing cleans the area between teeth that the toothbrush can't reach. Without flossing approximately one third of the teeth are not getting cleaned. Begin to floss as soon as your child's teeth touch. Floss at least once a day at bedtime.

Our offices have a Kid's Zone complete with videos and games. Come visit Dr. Grewal to ensure your child's dental health.
